From a Country Road

With very few exceptions, I’ve been to the places that are reflected in my paintings.  I’ve found that I need to physically see, feel and explore an idea before I can begin to think about painting it.  And, while I may make a quick sketch of the idea at its location, usually, the actual painting is done in the comfort of my house using photos that I took as I examined the subject.  It is during that time that I will probably modify the painting from the actual view that I originally saw.  Perhaps I’ll add or deduct something.  Or, I may rearrange various portions.  And sometimes, I’ll decide that it is not a painting for me.  That may not be the manner in which others paint, but it works for me.

“From a Country Road” developed in the manner I described with one major exception.  While I was taking the photos with my digital camera, something in the electronics failed.  As a result, the colors in the pictures were different from what I had seen.  But as I looked at the new colors, I realized that those same colors made me want to do the painting.
