GOING HOME
I am an artist who wants to have my art tell "story". For that reason, I usually don't attempt a piece until I fully know the "story" that needs to be shown on the paper. This painting is an exception. Yes, there is a "story" shown in "Going Home". But, I only know it in part.
Who is this man? I don't know. Is it an old man? Yes I think it is, but it could also be a younger man who is physically tired from his labor. Is it a "self-portrait"? No, even though I painted him to have my height, that wasn't my intent. Has he been gone from his home for an extended time, or is he just walking back after a day's work? I'm not sure, because at one time or the other during the painting, I was driven by both thoughts. Has the man died and is ths the way I visualize passing through death's door? Again, I'm not sure, but I had each of those thoughts as I worked on putting paint on the paper.
So, what is the full story of "Going Home"? Maybe the answer is to let the viewer complete it.
