At Rest
I always try to have a title for a painting even before I begin to paint it.
This piece is an exception. I had several things in mind but none seemed to
be right. Why? These are "blue collar" working boats. There's nothing fancy
about them. But the fishermen who make their living by harvesting the
bounty of the southern marshes couldn't do it without them. Nothing came
to mind that fully described the scene. They were full of nets, but "Net
Boats" didn't work for me. They are intended to work in the marshes, but
"Marsh Boats" just didn't seem right. A friend said that they were
'Painters"
(a boat used by workmen to paint the sides of larger vessels). However, I
wasn't sure if that described them or not, and it certainly didn't provide
understanding for the painting. I toyed with calling the painting, "Quitting
Time." That title, though, fit the fishermen who had left the boats in the
marsh but not the boats themselves. Finally, I went with my wife's
suggestion because it best described the feeling I felt when I was taking the
reference photos used to develop the piece.
The scene shown can be found anywhere from Virginia to Florida. These
two boats, though, work in the area of North Carolina called "Down East".
