Avera Road
OK, I admit that I am drawn to mail boxes, but I don't know why. I realized my fixation when I began to go through the photo references that I've taken for potential paintings. Time and again, there was a mailbox in the picture. Some were a result of my seeking the subject for the painting I did titled "236". But time and again, mailboxes were simply in a photo I took for other reasons. In recognizing my "attraction", I decided to do some additional paintings of the various mail boxes I've found.
"Avera Road" is a stretch of rural road in Mississippi. It is named for some distant relatives of my wife. Maybe, that was my original motivation for the photo I took. The name of the road is shown on a sign adjacent to the mailbox. However, the heavy chain supporting the box was probably the primary reason for the picture. I find it somewhat humorous that someone made the effort to weld the heavy links together but then bury it in the ground in a fashion that forced the mailbox to slope so severely. I also wonder if the mailman has trouble keeping the mail in the box as he tries to close the door before the mail slides out.
