Docks at Darien
Something about the Southeastern coast calls me to return again and again. Several years ago, we first visited Darien, GA and it resulted in a pastel titled Home for the Night. In 2011, Daneille and I were near the town and without thinking; we were suddenly standing on the Darien docks again. It was a chilly day in March but I began taking pictures of the various shrimp boats.
When I printed the pictures, one in particular began to speak to me. Surprisingly, while I had focused the camera on three boats docked sided by side, my interest in the photo was a small part of the background. Initially, I ignored my instinct and did a rough sketch and painting of the boats on which I had initially focused. But even with those, I had to add that small portion of background to the paintings. Finally, I gave into the feelings within me and began to make the background of the photo into the subject of a painting. It resulted in Docks at Darien. Maybe someday, Ill look at the photo again and do the painting of the three boats that first caught my attention. But for the present, Docks at Darien satisfies what pulled me back on that chilly day in March.
