Adairsville Skyline
Adairsville, Georgia is northwest of Atlanta and about half-way to Chattanooga, TN. In the fall of 2011 while exploring the area, we found several painting ideas. One of them developed into Adairsville Skyline. It depicts a portion of the roof of the largest house in the town, but a structure which is beginning to show its age. In its heyday, it must have been a grand home and it probably housed one of the most influential families in the area.
The title comes from the location of the house. Its on a hilltop overlooking the central portion of the town. And no matter where I stood to view it, I was struck with the manner in which the gables and roof were defined against the blue sky above. Perhaps, it is also a comparison of the small towns of Georgia and the City of Atlanta. With the latter, the skyline is defined by the office buildings and condominiums which mark the importance of business within the metropolitan area. And as important as that is, the skyscrapers are generally impersonal. In the small towns, though, there is usually a house or building which not only provides a skyline but has an organic presence that speaks of those who have dwelt or worked in it. Maybe, thats why I had to paint a portion of this house.
The original painting of Adairsville Skyline is a watercolor on 11 x 15 300 lb cold press paper.
