Lillie's Gullah Baskets
My wife and I were driving along the South Carolina
coast, near Edisto, when we saw a roadside stand selling
grass and reed baskets. A gentleman named Howard
was manning the stand. He told us that his wife, Lillie, had
made most of the baskets, although a few were made by
himself or one of their children. The baskets were beautiful,
and the love and skill required to make them was evident.
While my wife selected a basket to purchase, I asked Howards
permission to photograph the stand because I could already
visualize the drawing I wanted to make. Recently we
discovered that Lillie has a website where you can read
more about these sweetgrass baskets.
Lillie's Gullah Baskets is a graphite drawing on 24" x 18" paper,
using a pointillism technique. The original is not for sale, as
it is part of a private collection. However we have a few giclee prints.
